I was thinking about this in the context of my problem (Hibernate) and thought that instead of using the annotations to generate mapping files, maybe Hibernate could use the annotations directly. After investigating a bit in the Hibernate development list I discovered the Hibernate guys (of course) had already thought this... there is some ongoing effort to include annotations in Hibernate, so anybody not needing pre JDK1.5 compatibility would be able to use annotations directly and bypass the generation of mapping files with XDoclet.
