well, being commiter & maintainer of XD2 I should have
some experience  ;)

basically,  module development is easier because there
are:
  - self validating & formally defined tags
  - choice of templating engines ( jelly for xml
stuff, 
   velocity for non.xml 
  - better overall arcitecture allowing unit tests for
the plugin.

But XD2 is not technically related to XD1
