The first three patches in this series fix a race which I think is the cause of a bug reported by Jim Fehlig (thanks, Jim). They are IMO backport candidates.
The next 5 provide a test case which reproduces the bug. I actually developed these patches in the opposite order, and have verified that the without the fix, the test case fails the POLLNVAL assertion as expected.
