I didn't get the earlier mail, where the question was posted.

at the danger of sounding presumptuous, can IP aliases help?

in the Linux's Network Admin guide, it states that IP aliases :

"can completely replace the dummy interface and serve other useful
functions."

setting up an IP alias is the same in linux and solaris, with the
ifconfig command. eg:

#ifconfig hme0:1 172.40.30.4 netmask 255.255.0.0 up

or,

# ifconfig lo:0 172.16.1.1
