That is, if you use the same media on a real computer
("on metal"), you don't get the error about the missing
"...\i386\asms" file?
Hmm, microsoft has a knowledge base article about
such a problem:

According to that article "the Setup program cannot communicate with
the CD-ROM drive". (Well, so far the virtual cdrom drive hardware
in a xvm hvm environment worked fine for me, I didn't encounter that
"asms" file missing problem...)
