Sun still publishes the Solaris Express Community Edition at http://www.opensolaris.org/os/downloads/sol_ex_dvd/ The is similar to SXDE, but it still uses the old-style installer. You'll still have the xVM option in grub after installation. I haven't checked in a while, but I think the compilers are also shipped on that DVD, but aren't installed by default. Look around the DVD and you should find a script you can run.
