-Real-Time Serial Driver for 16550A-Compatible Devices
-=====================================================
-
-Driver revision: 1.5.0
-
-
-Preparation
------------
-
- - Decide which serial ports are to be managed by the real-time driver.
-
- - Identify their I/O addresses and IRQ numbers:
-
-   setserial /dev/ttyS<N>
-
- - Disable the Linux driver for all these devices:
-
-   setserial /dev/ttyS<N> uart none
-
-
-Configuration
--------------
-
- - Enable CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A in kernel configuration. The typical
- setup is modularised (see below for built-in configuration).
-
- - Pick I/O access mode. For standard-PCs, CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_PIO is
- recommended. Memory-mapped 16550A controllers (may be found on non-x86
- systems, or special PCI adapters) require either
-   CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_MMIO or CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_ANY.
-
-
-Invocation
-----------
-
-Port-base I/O:
-(CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_PIO or CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_ANY)
-
-modprobe xeno_16550A io=<io1>[,<io2>...]] [irq=<irq1>[,<irq2>...]]
-                     [baud_base=<base1>[,<base2>...]]
-                     [tx_fifo=<len1>[,<len2>...]] [start_index=<index>]
-
-Memory-mapped I/O:
-(CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_MMIO or CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_ANY)
-
-modprobe xeno_16550A mem=<mem1>[,<mem2>...] irq=<irq1>[,<irq2>...] ...
-
-Mixed I/O:
-(CONFIG_XENO_DRIVERS_16550A_ANY)
-
-modprobe xeno_16550A io=<io1>[,<io2>...]] mem=<mem1>[,<mem2>...] ...
-
-Arguments:
- io - Port-based I/O addresses of the devices, comma separated
-                  (e.g. "0x3f8,0x2f8")
- mem - Memory-mapped I/O addresses of the device, comma separated
-                  (e.g. "0xe0001000,0xe0001020")
- irq - interrupt numbers of the devices, comma separated (e.g.
- "4,3"), may be omitted if device and kernel support PnP
- baud_base - Maximum baud rates of the devices, comma separated, default
-                  is 115200
- tx_fifo - Transmitter FIFO sizes of the devices in bytes, comma
-                  separated, default is 16
- start_index - First device instance number to be used, default is 0
-                  (=> "rtser0")
-
-Examples:
-
-modprobe xeno_16550A io=0x3f8,0x2f8 irq=4,3
-(first two standard-PC UART ports on rtser0 and rtser1)
-
-modprobe xeno_16550A io=0x2f8,0 mem=0,0xe0001000 irq=3,9
-(second standard-PC UART on rtser0, some memory-mapped UART at 0xe0001000
-using IRQ #9 on rtser1)
-
-
-In-Kernel Driver Setup
-----------------------
-(kernel 2.6 only!)
-
-If you prefer to compile xeno_16550A into the kernel, the arguments listed
-above have to be provided as kernel parameter. Just prepend the prefix
-"xeno_16550A.", e.g. "xeno_16550A.io=0x3f8,0x2f8". To control the standard
-Linux 8250 serial driver, either disable it at compile time or set the number
-of managed ports via "8250.nr_uarts=N".
-
-
-Usage
------
-
-The API is described in the API documentation under Modules -> Real-Time
-Driver Model -> Device Profiles -> Serial Devices.

-The new Xenomai project has its roots in both the original Xenomai [1]

-GNU/Linux environment. The resulting development effort started in
-April 2004 has been initially hosted as an experimental branch of the
-RTAI project, called RTAI/fusion. Since October 2005, this effort is

-Overview
-========
-
-The Cobalt skin aims at providing a real-time POSIX API over Xenomai's
-dual kernel (Cobalt) core to user-space applications. It will also
-expose a few non portable extensions to the POSIX specification.
-
-This skin already contains most basic features :
-- threads,
-- mutexes,
-- semaphores (anonymous and named),
-- condition variables,
-- support for real-time signals,
-- cancellation, cancellation handlers
-- thread specific data
-- message queues
-- timers support
-- shared memory
-
-Known variations from the POSIX specification.
-==============================================
-
-The Xenomai Cobalt skin was implemented following as closely as
-possible the single unix specification V3, which can be accessed at
-the following URL:
-
-http://www.unix.org/single_unix_specification
-
-However, specifities of Xenomai implementation are documented as part
-of Xenomai doxygen documentation, available on-line at the following
-address:
-http://www.xenomai.org/documentation/trunk/html/api/group__posix.html
-
-You may observe some variations from the interfaces and behaviours described in
-the single unix specification. Here are the known ones:
-
-- the skin header file does not define the _POSIX* compile-time constants ;
-
-- nor does it defines the objects static initializers
-  (PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER, etc...) except for pthread_once_t ;
-
-- manually setting the thread stack address in thread attributes is not
-  supported ;
-
-- thread attributes contain non portable extensions :
- . pthread_attr_set/getfp_np to control whether the thread to be created will
-  use the FPU,
- . pthread_attr_set/getname to choose the name of threads (exclusively in
-  kernel-space, in user-space, use pthread_set_name_np),
-  . pthread_attr_set/getaffinity to set the threads processor affinity ;
-
-- priority ceiling protocol is not supported, use priority inheritance instead
;
-
-- simultaneous calls to pthread_join() specifying the same target thread simply
-  locks all the callers until the target thread exits, is canceled or killed ;
-
-- all functions should be asynchronous signal safe ;
-
-- the skin supports the RTLinux non portable extensions
pthread_make_periodic_np
- and pthread_wait_np, as a convenience to help porting applications from this
-  OS.
-
-- message queues:
- . In kernel-space, mq_open may only be called with the O_CREAT flag from a
- module initialization context. mq_close and mq_unlink may only be called from
- a module initialization or cleanup context.
-
-- timers:
- . the SIGEV_THREAD and SIGEV_NONE notification mechanism are not implemented.
- . timer_settime attaches the started timer to the caller, in the future, the
-  Linux/Glibc SIGEV_THREAD_ID may be implemented.
-
-- shared memory services, in kernel-space, are only acessible from modules
- initialization and cleanup contexts; in user-space, switch their caller to
-  secondary mode.
-
-Use of the Cobalt skin from applications
-========================================
-
-Deterministic replacements are provided for critical services of
-Linux's native POSIX interface. System calls to these services
-implemented in kernel space by the Cobalt skin are contained into the
-libcobalt.so library built from the lib/ sub-directory contents, and
-are aimed at shadowing the original Linux calls for the application,
-either from the LinuxThreads or NPTL libraries.
-
-Native POSIX services which do not require any interaction with the
-Linux kernel (e.g. pthread_mutexattr_*) and/or do not involve
-time-critical issues for their callers (e.g. pthread_exit()), are not
-overriden by Cobalt services, but can instead be used directly and
-seamlessly by the application.
-
-The list of shadowed POSIX services is available from the file
-lib/cobalt.wrappers.
-
---------------------------BEWARE------------------------------------
-Building an application which uses the real-time POSIX support
-requires using the proper compilation and link flags returned by the
-'xeno-config' script (default location is
-/usr/realtime/bin/xeno-config). You should have a look at the demos/
-sub-directory, which contains a small Makefile illustrating the use of
-such script on a simple code example.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-Original (i.e. un-shadowed) calls can still be invoked from the
-application, by prefixing their name with
-"__real_". E.g. __real_sem_init() calls the original initialization
-routine for semaphores as provided by the LinuxThreads/NPTL
-implementation. All services listed in lib/cobalt.wrappers are
-substituted with their Xenomai replacement when invoked through
-their vanilla names.
-
-Caveats:
-
-- Use of the static initializers PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER and
-PTHREAD_COND_INITIALIZER in setting up mutex and condition variable
-replacements is invalid; dynamic initialization through the
-pthread_mutex_init() and pthread_cond_init() routines must be used
-instead, otherwise, mutex and condition variable-related calls would
-always return an error status (EINVAL).
-
-- Real-time signals sent to user-space threads cause migration to secondary
-  mode.
-
-Undefined behaviour.
-=====================
-
-Some special cases are not covered by the POSIX specification or described as
-being "undefined", but some implementation decisions had to be made :
-
-- trying to post a semaphore whose count is already SEM_VALUE_MAX returns
-  EINVAL ;
-
-- pthread_equal simply compares the two pthread_t, which are pointers, no
- attempts is made to verify whether the corresponding threads exist.
-
-
-
-TODO List
-==========
-
-The Cobalt skin still lacks some features which will be added gradually :
-- spinlocks/rwlocks/barriers ;
-- real-time signals in primary mode for user-space threads.
-- dimensioning constants configurable through kernel configuration menu.
