Are they blocking you to access other ports then 80 or 21 on remote
machines?
Why allow you to use http then? It is just as unsafe. You can fetch files
through it.
No I don't think they block you on port level.
I rather beleive you have the standard trouble with firewall and ftp.

Set your ftp client to passive mode transfers. Then you will be the one
that initiates all connections through the firewall.

Blocking ftp sites is an internal thing.  The Army has decided that any ftp
site cannot be accessed because of security reasons.  I get to the folder,
but I am blocked from actually downloading any files.

Hey Maureen,

I'm not sure what you mean that cannot access ftp sites. If you can
browse the WWW, you can access ftp sites...

Here is a URL for getting GNU software:

ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/GNU/tar/

Download it, untar it with Solaris tar and read the REAME and INSTALL,
and they should explain most of what you need.

If you can't surf the WWW, I don't know how to help you.
