Hi Martin,

Well, we thought about using the new IDOM, but it's still lacking some
important features that we need for good XSLT processing, and it would mean
complete disruption of the code base to move to it.  In addition, the IDOM
is still experimental, although it's getting close to being ready to use.

I asked the Xerces-C team for something like the IDOM two years ago, but
it's just now getting to the point where it's possible to build on top of
it.  We just couldn't wait that long, so we went with our own proprietary
tree.  That not only gave us the opportunity for better performance, but it
also gave us a chance to tune the interfaces for better XSLT processing,
which is very important.
