Yes, I did build the library and samples myself.  The build was successful.
I did the same steps on both machines, but only the 5.7 machine results in
the error when testing the install.

It seems you are using the source package (xerces-c-src1_6_0).   The source
package only has source distributed.  So did you build the Xerces library
and the samples yourself?   Was the build successful?
