If you're on Windows, then yes, you cannot mix the runtimes.  This is a
FAQ.

I'm assuming you mean you changed your application to use the debug version
of Xerces?  I'm not sure how you would be able to link Xalan itself with a
debug version of Xerces, unless you changed the Xalan project files.

Since static data is per module instance, you had the situation where Xalan
was using the Xerces debug library, which was not initialized, and your
application was using the Xerces release library, which you were
initializing.

Ok... strange one...

Is there any constraints regarding linking the debug Xalan libraries to the
release Xerces libraries? I changed xerces to use the debug library,
matching xalan, and all was well.
