Sorry have not had time to look into canonical formatting. My current opinion is that it would be OK for format-pretty-print to potentially make a document invalid (with Xerces specific words in the API doco), and leave it for the canonical-form feature to worry about maintaining validity with the DTD/Schema. That way most requirements will be met by format-pretty-print (mind you I can see someone getting burnt :-)) and then maybe one day the canonical-form feature can be implemented.
I have not raised the issue with DOM WG, but will in the next day or so. Seeing as the spec uses the word 'transformation' and makes format-pretty-print and canonical-form mutually exclusive I think there is scope for the output document to be made invalid wrt the original documents DTD/Schema - ie basically do whatever the Xerces community wants :-).
BTW
Appreciate the follow up - thanks.

Hi all,
I don't want this thread to disappear into oblivion again so this
is the last chance to speak up. Duncun, have you or do you intend to
query the DOM WG on the issues you raised?
Gareth
