I sent a couple of emails to the mailing list a while back, detailing the simple changes needed on a variety of platforms (aix, sun, linux, windows) to build a static library. I had hoped that the changes would have made it into the 2.6 release, so we could at least have the option of getting a static library. If needed, I can detail the changes again here. I know there are people who are interested.
