You want something you think is "nice," but has a very high cost. 
Something that would require a major modification to the XML standard and 
every XML parser already implemented ought to be more than "nice to have."

I would hope not.  Subverting standards is a terrible thing to do, and 
you're overestimating the influence of Xerces-C in the XML world.
