How to put a xml-Object in a string?

Hi,

I've tried $writer->writeToString($xmldoc) wich works fine, but it 
makes utf16.
How can I write a xml-Object to a string with correct encoding? (utf8)
I can't find the right way to use the right XMLFormatTarget to use
for this purpose.
Has anyone an example? I'm using Xerces-Perl.
