The problem is this: the changes in pronunciation were assimilated faster
than changes in spelling.  And once the printing press came along and
widespread literacy, the evolution of spelling ended and we were frozen
into a system that was by then several centuries out of date.  Reminds me
of 16-bit legacy code in Windows 95...
