XML_GCC is set if your platform is linux and compiler has GNUG set and wtypes.h is also included accordingly. We over here have done build on linux 2.91.66 and gcc ver 2.91.66, glibc 2.1.2. So, I don't think its going to be a problem building xerces out of the box on your specified system.
