For the record, this question was raised to the DOM WG, and on the
public www-dom mailing list.
Well, I'm sorry to report that the spec actually reads as it should. As
Joe and I remembered, it's not what we had first planned. However,
that's what has been decided later on based on public feedback. So we
have a bug in Xerces I will try to fix.
