Just tried again with the latest Xerces from CVS, running one the
regression tests in the xml-xalan\test directory tree:
debugapi.bat org.apache.qetest.trax.stream.StreamResultAPITest
... and now I'm seeing unexpected 
 in our output rather than
unexpected 
. This is not a great improvement.
Still working on isolating the failure in an easier-to-fix form.
