This does not flow through the Xerces serializers; it's a separate code base, tuned for Xalan's needs. Xalan has not been tested intensively in this mode; its serializers have primarily been invoked from the rest of the XSLT processor, which drives them via SAX and which pre-filters the data stream to some degree. We know we have some open issues in the "default identity transformation" from a DOM; this may be related to one of those. So I _think_ what you're looking at is actually a Xalan bug rather than a Xerces bug.
