Alternatively, code your own hashing mechanism -- we did that in several places in Xalan, where hashing was the right answer but Sun's Hashtable class wasn't. Remember, you don't have to use the canned solutions that come with the JDK; home cooking is more work but sometimes tastes a lot better. There may be other lookup mechanisms worth considering.
