This problem has been lurking for quite a while--possibly for the entire time Xerces2 has existed. I'm not all that optimistic that it will get fixed of its own accord any time soon, if past history is any guide. Therefore, if it's important enough, you might be well-advised to consider trying to put together a patch; if it looks safe and doesn't hurt performance, the chances are good it'd be committed...
