It works fine with JDK 1.3 and Xerces 2.4 It does not work with JDK 1.4 and Xerces 2.4 (I did not try JDK 1.4 with override) The problem is in the xml-apis.jar rather than the XercesImpl.jar. I found an old implementation of the xml-apis.jar in my class path (Sorry). When I got rid of that it worked.
