matching wildcard is strict, but no declaration can be found-- importing XMLSchema 
itself

Xerces did have limitations in handling the S4S. But that's history. I made 
changes so that now we are capable of processing it. It's been there for many 
releases. And as I indicated, I couldn't reproduce the error you mentioned.
I was using a Windows box, but I doubt it has anything to do with the result.
Is it possible that a different version of xerces got in the way when you ran 
your tests?
And no, it's not a limitation in the schema spec (at least not anymore).
