If you're also using Xalan (besides Xerces) you might also use the XPathAPI.
We use it all the time in our products and I find it much easier and less
error-prone than direct DOM-traversal.

I you've got Xalan installed you can find the XPathAPI.java helper class in
the samples/ApplyXPath-subdirectory.
