Well well.. this will be dirty.
Import the Xerces.jar over the the IBM XML Parser for Java. When it asks whether to overwrite, select "Yes to All". This will do the trick. And BTW if you are using Xalan. Create a new project and import Xalan.
Also, when porting to WebSphere; make a a jar from IBM XML Parser for Java and put this ahead of everything in the classpath. This will ensure that any other classes using XML4J would work along with your code using Xerces.
This was the only way I got it to work.
