These aspects of the schema spec aren't supported because no one's had the time to implement them. :-( Left up to the group doing the schema development at the moment, it will probably take a month or so for this support to be implemented. But if you'd like to help then things could happen faster. :-) As to a workaround: I guess you could use an attribute, since we do support default values for attributes.
