Help with japanese encoding

I downloaded xerces 1.3, and crimson 1.1, inside crimson's package there is
a sample (attached) with japanese encoding. But I fail to parse it with
either xerces or crimson. Both complained euc-jp is not supported. But in
the faq for xerces it says it is supported, and the sample is form crimson
package. And IE5 seems to display it ok. What am I missing?
My classpath for xerces:
CLASSPATH=C:\xml\xerces-1_3_0\xerces.jar;C:\xml\xerces-1_3_0\xercesSamples.j
