This has got nothing to do with the XML Spy. By "no namespace" version, I understand you as not defining any targetNamespace. So, when you do not specify a targetNamespace in the Schema, the elements defined in the schema are not in any namespace, or say, they are in null namespace, hence, you need not use prefixes in the XPath expressions as well, which, then looks for nodes in the null namespace. But, when you have a targetNamespace in the Schema, you must use prefixes in the XPath expressions for correct result.
