As per the latest draft of DOM L3 L/S (June 2003) DOMWriter interface has been changed to DOMSerializer. So the implementation class name is changed from DOMWriterImpl to DOMSerializerImpl. I think you are right it should have been part of release notes or mentioned somewhere else..
