Unfortunately my code is running inside a commercial package that supplies
Xerces and I can't change it. As far as I can tell this always happens at
start up and was wondering if it had anything to do with the caching config we
are using. It has some static variables in it but I do not know Xerces well
enough to understand when and how those get used.
This is the line we use to invoke the caching configuration.
System.setProperty("org.apache.xerces.xni.parser.XMLParserConfiguration",
"org.apache.xerces.parsers.XMLGrammarCachingConfiguration");

Just skimming over the code in the org.apache.xerces.impl.dtd.models
package, I didn't see anything striking that would indicate an issue with
thread safety, though that doesn't mean there wasn't one or isn't one
somewhere. Have you tried to reproduce the problem yet with the most
recent version of the parser: Xerces-J 2.5.0?
