It's likely to be perl. Since I haven't closed the handle, the file
I/O might not have gotten written to disk. It all depends on how
perl's configured, e.g. is it using the PerlIO layer, or stdin?
I've applied the patches, and they'll be in the upcoming 1.4 release.
