Sorry, I would upgrade to some version of gcc 2.95, 2.8.1 is ancient,
and there have been many C++ improvements since then.
Can you compile Xerces-C ok? Can you run the sample programs that come
with Xerces-C? If not, then perhaps you're not locating the
xerces-c1_4.so in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
