Hi Diederick, Thanks for your message. I run an "unstable" Debian and there is nothing I can update beyond this. TeX Live 2009 is the latest available in the Debian repositories, I will have to check whether "experimental" offers a newer version. I thought about updating Bidi but am afraid I will run into problems if I only update one package.
I understand that bidirectional documents are complex and think that Vafa has done a terrific job with Bidi. But I am also trying to understand why this package changes the document class's footnote format. I say this in light of Vafa's plans to implement a multi-level footnote system in Bidi. Is this really necessary? Besides, this might be a bug that is still alive in later versions of Bidi, or has this been a know issue and fixed?
