Hi Wilfried, hi don, the desired ordering would be
page 1: a s1 b s1 c s1 1 s1 .. 6 s1 a s2 1 s2 .. 4 s2// page 2: contd. 4 s2 b s2 c s2 d s2 5 s2 a s3 1 s3 2 s3 the idea of having 4 different types of footnotes seems to solve the problem for section 1 (footnoteA, footnoteB) and section2 (footnoteC footnoteD) on the first page, but I would run into trouble on the second page: section 3 can't restart with footnoteA footnoteB which would be wrongly placed above footnoteC and footnoteD: page 2: a s3 (fnA) 1 s3 (fnB) 2 s3 b s2 (fnC) c s2 d s2 contd. 4 s2 (fnD) 5 s2 I like the proposal using endnotes in short sections (which pose the problem of overlapping footnotes). It would keep readability, saves some space and I'll test it. thanks for Your replies and helpful commenting on, matthias -------------------------------------------------- Subscriptions, Archive, and List information, etc.: http://tug.org/mailman/listinfo/xetex
