Can you imagine a (shell) script that goes this way:
xelatex ... > file
xelatex ... >> file
xelatex ... >> file
xelatex ... > other_file
What happens to the LOG file? Isn't that created anew each time xelatex is run?
Doesn't it contain all warnings from the last run?
