Your font service must be confused or in some other disorder! I used your test
file with TL 2012, 2011, and 2010 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 (SNow Leopard). Pdfinfo
shows that LinLibertineOZI or Linux Libertine O Semibold Italic is used for the
word "italics". This could also mean that XeTeX makes the wrong choice or your
font service uses other thresholds than mine. With fontspec you can define
which font variant will be used for which markup. Maybe this corrects your
issue.

If you're not confused, you're not paying attention.
