My workaround solution was to use gs to convert the pdf file from version
1.5 to version 1.4
I'm also getting this error, but I can't figure out how to use gs to make the conversion. I see
ghostscript's manual here

but don't see any parameter to change the pdf version. What was your command
line for the conversion?
