Use a native PostScript printer!

Other printers need a host based (foreign) software that converts PS or PDF to
a bitmap in a format the printer understands. This conversion software must not
always understand what is contained in the PS or PDF file…

On my Mac I can use a software supplied from my printer manufacturer which
converts PS or PDF to a bitmap that my PS3 printer also understands. The
print-outs of these bitmaps look different. They not only look "out of focus"
and are a bit scaled down, they can also show different characters (with PS
input).

I can see the printed maintenance and bicycle symbols and their texts. (TeX
Live 2012 with XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-0.9999.2 (TeX Live 2013).) Have you
looked into your printer's LOG file? A UNIX host maintains such a file,
recording the sad and happy happenings around print jobs. Maybe the failure to
convert the symbol(s) is recorded in your system's LOGs.

People say that if you play Microsoft CD's backwards, you hear satanic things,
but that's nothing, because if you play them forwards, they install MS Windows.
