To summarize: it looks like there are some problems with Gentium Pro, and
I'll send a list of all of the issues I've noticed to Lorna Evans off-list.

I can either wait for a release of the font that fixes these problems, or I
can switch to using precomposed characters with XeTeX. And it looks like I
can do this either with the TECKit map that Nathan Sidoli provided, or by
changing the program that I'm using to generate the XeTeX input.

I haven't followed this thread in detail, but has anyone suggested
(and have you tried) simply setting the option

   \XeTeXinputnormalization = 1

in your document?

Or switch to XeTeX 0.9999 which render both correctly (didn’t look
deeper, but I suspect it is HarfBuzz’s normalization).

Thanks, Khaled, that’s the explanation why I had troubles when trying to replicate Richard’s problem, and also why I was unable to test decomposed EBGaramond directly. Is there a way to disable HB’s normalization?

Georg
