It's a font suitcase. It contains some optimised bitmaps of a few font sizes 
and it contains TrueType fonts. Otherwise, with PostScript Type 1 fonts, it 
would be NFONT, SFNT, or LWFN. Font Book and Finder should both be able to 
clearly name the contents.

Could be xdvipdfmx has lost its know-how on using this font file type… Could be 
the font file is broken. The Font Book offers to validate a font.

One last option is that William Voelker is now running Mountain Lion and maybe 
this version of Mac OS X cannot handle this font file type… Is it visible in 
Mountain Lion's Font Book?
