You're not being ignorant, just asking a perfectly valuable question. I don't want - the section-numbers before the Chapter heading, but it still to appear in the table of contents - I do want the section-numbers before the \subsection but not before the \subsubsection - but the \subsection is to appear in the toc, whereas the \subsubsection isn't!
