All true, but both latex + dvips and pdflatex produce the expected output, as do latex + dvipdfmx or xelatex with the older driver set up.
In the older driver set up for (x)dvipdfmx, negative values in the bounding box are not treated right. Therefore Karl changed to use '-dEPSCrop'.
