Normally, setenv is used with csh. If the OP is using csh (not unexpected for a long-time TeX user) there may be some obscure configuration glitches. Here, a tcsh user gets normal behaviour from MacTeX and macports' texlive. Macports' also provides TeXShop (versions 3.75 or 2.47). Lots of moving parts and very little hard data here. -- George N.
