I have tested tcsh, ksh and bash and all fail to show the problem.
$ tcsh --version
tcsh 6.18.01 (Astron) 2012-02-14 (amd64-sun-solaris) options
wide,nls,dl,al,kan,rh,color,filec
$ tcsh

Even if I change
xelatex \\showthe\\everyjob
to

I do not see the problem.
