I'm not sure I understand at all what you mean. When you connect a display, the
minimal dialog (the thing in your screenshot) will show up (if the option for
it is enabled), then you can select one of those presets or your own profile,
which you can now save in the display dialog.
Then you should close that dialog again as you don't need it anymore.

When you disconnect the cable, there is no such dialog and there's only the
laptop left.

It works exactly as you describe it. Just not via the minimal dialog, because
it's not needed.

Or do I fundamentally miss something here? (Your screencast didn't help me at
all)
