Having a transparent background by setting alpha to zero in Panel
Preferences.Appearance/Background (slider) no longer possible in 4.14.,
presumably alpha now being set to 100. Also semi-transparent backgrounds no
longer possible.
The alpha slider is present in 4.14pre2.
