With current version 1.8.12 of Thunar the issue simply disappeared,
interestingly on all 3 machines that were affected. It wasn't even necessary to
delete the thumbnail cache (6 different user accounts). I also tried a full
system rebuild before, esp. toolchain, with no success. This was a month ago.
Now in between some updates took place and it is running fine again. Tried
different file types with no crashes anymore. Thanks for advice/ patience.
