yum install switchdesktop
then run it in a terminal as<user>
there is also a GUI yum install switchdesktop-gui
again run it as<user>
According to pbone.net there is only a switchdesk available
for FC15. YUM says nothing is available either (switchdesk,
switchdesktop, or switchdesktop-gui).
I doubt it either as I believe it would give the same
result as this FC14 bug:

What release of Fedora is Scientific Linux 6.1 based on?
I can suggest to look at /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients, but I am not sure that gdm
reads this file.
I use FXCE since 4.4.3, but never with gdm.
