You know that yumex has an "find as you type" option which can be
acitvated in the setting or by clicking on the lens on the left side
of the searchfield?

Thanks yes i found that. But i don't think yumex is as good as synaptic.
Aptitude is the most powerful package manager i've ever used (was Debian's
default) - BUT one's got to read the manual (and it's a long read) to
appreciate it's features) which is probably why most didn't bother and used
apt.
